How early is too early to start looking for a job? +
I am on a visa. When should I sign an employment offer? +
The visa application process starts on October 1st in most states, so it is a good rule of thumb to interview, negotiate and sign a contract well before then, so you can be first in line with your application. While there are some exceptions to the Conrad 30 program, most states adhere to the 30-slot limit (which includes anyone needing a visa, not just those in the medical field). Further, some states fill up early, so if you have a particular interest in a certain part of the country, you will want to interview and make decisions as early as possible. Our suggested timeline is below:
- March/April – Confirm all interviews you will be participating in and get them scheduled.
- May – Schedule and complete phone interviews.
- June – Schedule and complete onsite interviews.
- July – Complete offer review (individually or with an attorney) and submit questions/proposed revisions to employer.
- August – Agree to and sign offer of employment or submit counteroffer.
- September – Obtain copy of countersigned contract (agreed to and signed by all parties) to submit with visa application.
- October – Have completed application ready to submit as soon as the process opens.
What is the IMLC and how can I take advantage of it? +
IMLC stands for Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. The IMLC offers an expedited licensure process for physicians who want to practice in multiple states or hold multiple state licenses. This is especially beneficial to Locum Tenens physicians or those that provide telemedicine services in various states.
In order to join the IMLC, you must first determine if you are eligible and then apply for licensure. You can find details regarding eligibility and the application process on the IMLC website.
